If you’re like much of the Eastern Washington cannabis community, you love anything by small, boutique grower, View Askew Farms, out of Wenatchee. Their indoor-grown, terpene-rich strains like Snoop’s Dream, Melon Gum, and their signature strain, Orange Kush are quickly earning View Askew Farms a place in the hearts of locals—especially at 2020 Solutions Ephrata!
If you haven’t tried anything by View Askew Farms, or you’re new to cannabis in the Columbia Basin, then read on and find out a little more about this amazing product and the farmers who grow it.
View Askew Farms is a small, Tier-2 operation owned and run by Aaron Scott, who grew up in the Wenatchee Valley. It’s an all-indoor, hydroponic grow, which not only helps with production and consistency, but as Aaron points out, “Indoor hydro really lets those terpenes shine.”
Aaron has been growing a long time, since starting with a plant in the closet during his college days, and then in the medical market before I502. Now, with recreational as a viable way to make a living, he’s decided to take his concept of small, boutique cannabis and make a go of it.
And he’s doing it all himself. “My ten fingers touch every bud that comes through here,” he says. “I grow soilless, top-shelf cannabis, hand-trim everything, and cure it all in glass jars.”
Rather than try to compete with mega farms who can offer dozens, if not more, strains, View Askew focuses on core varieties, while occasionally branching out with something new. “I experiment with new strains from time to time,” he says. “But, I really only run about eight to ten strains at a time. And six or seven of those are my core strains—genetics I’ve had for years.”
What does it take for a strain to become a core strain? For Aaron, it’s about more than just potency and numbers. It’s really all about the terpenes—the aromas and flavors, and subtle effects those can have on the high. “My terpiest strains are the best-sellers, by far,” says Aaron.
Because Aaron didn’t have the financing to start out as a large Tier-3, he was somewhat forced to go small—boutique—craft cannabis. As the market evolves, he hopes this will be a blessing. He draws a parallel to the micro-brew beer industry, where smaller is better, with a focus on high-quality and subtle, nuanced flavors.
“20 years ago, in the beer aisle, it was Coors, Miller, Bud, Bud Light,” he says. “But I don’t like Budweiser. I like IPA. 10 years ago, all you bought was pot. You didn’t know what strain it was or anything like that. Now, we’re getting knowledge out to the public, and in time, people will start to appreciate higher quality. For me, I don’t like cheap beer, and I don’t like cheap, crappy weed.”
Being able to legally pursue his passion for cannabis in his beloved hometown of Wenatchee, Aaron is living the dream. He grew up appreciating the natural beauty of Eastern Washington, being so close to everything—skiing, lakes, the desert. And even moreso, the people and sense of neighborhood. “I can still name a dozen phone numbers of grandparents of friends of mine from childhood. You just knew that stuff.”
Now, he is able to make a career doing what he loves in an area he loves, helping the people he loves. What more could any cannabis lover ask for?
